The Concept

Oak Tree Lodge number 9408 came about as a result of a number of like minded masons meeting together and identifying a need for a new lodge in the Knaphill/Bisley area of Surrey. They were motivated by a keen sense of 'getting it right' and they felt that between them, this level of excellence could be achieved.

There were a number of primary meetings of the founders to discuss the feasibility of a lodge and there was widespread support.

The Beginnings

From those initial meetings, to its consecration some five years later, the founders created a complete set of workings which was drawn from the best practices of many lodges which they had visited during their masonic lives. Having established these workings, the next question was to find a ritual which would fit this unique structure. It was at this point that W Bro Charles Bendall (who has recently been appointed a Grand Officer) produced a little known ritual, known as the 'Revised Ritual', which fitted the bill exactly.

Through the founders connections with Sit Perpetuum Lodge (no 5725), it was agreed that the meetings would be held at the 'Tin Temple' located within the grounds of the National Rifle Association, Bisley. Sit Perpetuum agreed to sponsor Oak Tree thus making it Oak Tree's mother lodge. Oak Tree Lodge was now complete and ready to function.

The Lodge is Born

Oak Tree Lodge was consecrated by the then Rt W Prov Grand Master the Earl of Shannon at Croydon Lodge on 24 May 1991 which was the first regular meeting. On the 15th October 1991 Oak Tree held its first regular meeting in its own right.

Why 'Oak Tree'?

The lodge derives its name from the fact that the early meetings were held at one of the founders homes in Oak Tree Road, Knaphill, and on a more symbolic note the image of an oak tree represents the growth from an acorn to the stability of an oak.

Oak Trees' motto is 'E Glande Quercus' which loosely translated from Latin means 'From acorn to oak tree'.

The Formative Years

Because of Oak Tree's unique workings and its friendly welcome, it quickly gained a reputation for being somewhere to visit. It has grown steadily over the past decade, priding itself on quality rather than quantity.

Charity

Since its inception, Oak Tree Lodge has been able to donate many thousands of pounds to a variety of charitable causes both locally and globally and has contributed to central masonic charities.

This money has been raised not only by direct charitable donations within lodge but also through a number of social activities open to masons and non masons alike, ranging from go-carting to 'black tie' gala dinners with celebrity guests.

The Future

Like all lodges, it is our desire to grow in number whilst at the same time retaining the principles under which the lodge was formed.

Like the oak tree itself, having now secured our roots, we look forward to growing in strength and stature in years to come.
